Abū Muṣ'ab al-Sūrī and the Invasion of Afghanistan

I have been reading the abridged version of Abū Muṣ’ab al-Sūrī’s book The Global Islamic Resistance Call (Da’wat al-Muqāwamah al-Islāmīyyah al-’Alāmīyyah) edited by Jim Lacey and came across an interesting passage when discussing the history of the Tunisian jihadist movement:

They did not have much interest in the battle of the Taliban and the Muslim principality, and they were hesitant to get involved with the Taliban government or to consider it a religious legal leader in Afghanistan … They were also not convinced of the attempts bin Laden and al Qaida were making, nor of the latter’s military unidirectional penchant. Indeed, this was the case with the majority of the organizations and the Arab groups in Afghanistan. Nevertheless, despite all of these facts, when the American attacks occurred, every one of them got involved in that battle.

This reminded me of a recent tweet from Leah Farrall:

I wonder when, if ever, we’ll start talking about how we made AQ’s day, with Afghanistan, then Iraq.

I’m not sure whether Farrall is referencing al-Sūrī’s observation that the American invasion brought together a bunch of disparate nationalist-jihadist movements into al-Qā’idah’s global jihadist mold or that it led the United States into an economically bloodletting war. Either way, it raises an interesting question that has not been discussed much: what role the invasion of Afghanistan had on bringing many of the nationalist-jihadist groups — that were solely training in Afghanistan during the Ṭālibān’s rule to overthrow their own local regimes — over to al-Qā’idah’s side.
Addendum: It should be noted that I am not necessarily saying that we should not have invaded Afghanistan, rather it is just something to think about.

New statement from Ḥarakat al-Shabāb al-Mujāhidīn: "Regarding the Closure of Mobile Money Transfer (MMT) Service in Somalia"

New statement from Ḥarakat al-Shabāb al-Mujāhidīn's al-Katāi'b Media Foundation: "Resuming of data"

NOTE: According to al-Katāi’b Media Foundation they did not distribute information for more than two months due to a disruption in their communication system. It is currently back up and they apologized for the lack of communication to those who were concerned. al-Katāi’b Media Foundation is the outlet for Ḥarakat al-Shabāb al-Mujāhidīn, an al-Qā’idah-affiliated organization located in Somalia.

Anṣār al-Mujāhidīn English Forum translates al-Malāḥim Media's "The Reality of the Rulers" by Shaykh Abū Zūbayr 'Adīl bin 'Abdullah al-Abāb

UPDATE: al-Mūwaḥidīn Islamic Library translated Shaykh Abū Zūbayr ‘Adīl bin ‘Abdullah al-Abāb’s “The Reality of the Rulers” into Urdu. For a copy of it click here.

New video from As-Saḥāb Media: "Knights of Khurāsān: Abū Ja'far al-Kūwaitī Martyrdom Operation against a Base in Marghā"

UPDATE: An Arabic transcription of the below video has been released:
As-Saḥāb Media- “Knights of Khurāsān: Abū Ja’far al-Kūwaitī Martyrdom Operation against a Base in Marghā”

NOTE: This video is part of the martyrology style of videos produced by jihadists. In it, Abū Ja’far al-Kūwaitī explains why he is conducting a suicide attack (or as they would call it a martyrdom operation). The video was produced in Arabic and Urdu. Producing videos or statements simultaneously in Arabic and Urdu has become a recent norm for al-Qā’idah Central’s media outlet As-Saḥāb (the clouds). There was some confusion over where the attack took place since Marghā sounds like Mārjah, which was the location of a large joint US/NATO operation earlier in the year. Additionally, the guys at Anṣār al-Mujāhidīn English Forum transliterated Marghā as Mārjah. In Arabic, though, Marghā is مرغا while Mārjah is مارجة and in the statement title in Arabic it explicitly says مرغا. Further, Marghā is in Paktika Province while Mārjah is in Helmand Province.

al-Qā’idah in the Arabian Peninsula's al-Malāḥim Media presents a new audio message from Shaykh Abū Zūbayr ‘Adīl bīn ‘Abdullah al-Abāb: "We Responded to the Sharī'ah of God, not the Laws of 'Alī Ṣāliḥ"

NOTE: Shaykh Abū Zūbayr ‘Adīl bīn ‘Abdullah al-Abāb is believed to be a member of al-Qā’idah in the Arabian Peninsula’s (AQAP) shūrā council. In August, the Global Islamic Media Front released a translation of his lecture titled “Loyalty to the Believers.” The title of this new audio message is in reference to Yemen’s President ‘Alī ‘Abdullah Ṣāliḥ who AQAP as well as other global jihadists believe is not following or implementing the sharī’ah (Islamic law) of God. For more on Shaykh Abū Zūbayr ‘Adīl bīn ‘Abdullah al-Abāb see the various posts by Gregory D. Johnsen of Waq al-Waq on him.
