Two months after Bashar al-Assad’s ouster, Syrian officials are preparing for a major international conference in Paris this week that will discuss their country’ political transition and reconstruction. To get a sense of where things stand today, foreign decisionmakers should focus on issues related to counterterrorism, accountability for Assad regime criminals, the future of Hezbollah and Iran’s local networks, Syria’s chemical weapons program, border arrangements with Israel, and the inclusivity of the political process.

3:140. Here it is in full: “If a wound should touch you – there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that God may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs – and God does not like the wrongdoers.”

The title of this release is in reference to Qur’anic verse 33:23. Here it is in full: “Among the believers are men true to what they promised God. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration.”
